Methane (CH4) Concentration Measurements
About methane concentration measurements in general:
Natural gas is the mixture of saturated carbon hydrides, these components are the members of the so called methane series
(methane CH4,
ethane C2H6, propane C3H8, butane C4H10, pentane C5H12,
oktane C6H14 etc.).
The more higher the number of carbon hydrides in the natural gas is , the higher is its calorific value, the methane concentration of the
natural gas used in practice however is over 90 %.
During the complete combustion of natural gas besides the release
of significant quantity of heat, it dissolves into carbon dioxide and water combustion products; in the case of methane the process goes as follows:
CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O
In practice, in the case of boiler firing systems the natural gas also contains different pollutants, furthermore the process of complete combustion cannot always be provided either.
The measurements of workplaces:
Incomplete combustion makes the methane concentration essential on boilers, tanks or pipelines before carrying out any kind of work
on these equipments or in their surroundings. It is dangerous, because its inhalation or performing any work that may go together
with spark formation can cause serious accidents.
Escape measurements:
Our company undertakes the methane escape measurements of pipings, as well as of both industrial and domestic firing equipments.
We examine the adequacy of the blowing efficiency of pipes such as the escape of tanks and other storing devices
This service of the Kalkon Ltd. is performed with Testo 316-1 methane detecting device.
